TLC Stiff Cream Soap
NOTE: I need to clarify something.
This is a formula that I have been making since 1999 and just put it on the site a few years ago
because of requests from several member of my soapmaking list. I have others that I make, but this is the only one
that I will place here. Formulation for this type of soap takes a lot of calculations and I do mine
by hand several times to get it as right as I can. And yes, this soap can be and is superfatted.
This formula can be made in the Cold Processed method, allowing it to set for a few weeks or in the Hot Processed method and used right away.
Below are a few pictures of the Stiff Creamed Soap with the process and the formula. This soap is a soap
that I have made in just this manner for several years now. If you are new to soapmaking, you might want to wait on this one.
2 oz. Stearic Acid
6 oz. Coconut Oil 76°
8 oz. Olive Oil
3 oz. Unrefined Shea Butter
1 oz. Castor Oil
1 Tbsp. Borax
1 Tbsp. Glycerin
12 oz. Water (super thick)
or
16 oz. Water (thick)
2.9 oz. Potassium Hydroxide
.6 oz. Sodium Hydroxide
This mixture is mixed when everything is hot, the oils and the lye mixture.
Melt the oils and stearic together and melt slowly till all is
all melted. In the mean time weigh out the water and
the lye's. Add the Borax to the water and stir till it is dissolve and then add the lye's
to the water and stir till dissolved and clear. When you add the lye water to the oils,
the lye water will be around 120° and the oils will be around 150°. The temperatures are
not critical, so don't worry. But just combine while hot. You can add the glycerin any time.
I recommend that you not use over 16 oz. of water because that can cause
separation of the mixture.
First pulse the mixture with the stick blender,
it will start getting thick right away. Hand
stir and pulse a time or 2. The mixture will
start to separate a few times. Stir and rest
several times and then the mixture will come
together in a heavy, thick creamy soap. I have
to do this because my right arm gives out very
easily now. Stir in your fragrance, I used about 3 tsp. and a special oil or butter,
about a Tbsp., that is melted, at this time. Let this set for about 2 weeks before using
if you do it in the Cold Processed method, allow it to cure for a few weeks.
If you decide to cook it, do that either in a double boiler, stirring now and then as it comes to
the gel stage. Or you can process it in the microwave in
several short bursts, stirring between bursts.
This takes longer in the double boiler method, so I choose to use the microwave method. I add my scent and
1 tbsp. of special oil at the end of the cook and stir in
completely and do one more short burst in the microwave.
Then I let it set in the bowl till the next day.
I can not say what the superfatting is for sure because I am only a kitchen chemist and I am going
on how this feels after we have used it. It lathers very well, cleans very well and makes the skin
feel nice and soft. This formula is for making a soap that is dipped out of an open container, not a pumpable
soap because it is a very thick soap. You can add to this to make a facial soap, shaving soap or a hand soap
for the kitchen or bathroom or for a mechanics hand cleaner.
