2 General Lotion and Cream Formulas Below you will find 2 general formulas that you can use to make your own Lotions and Creams. I do not make suggestions for the oils, butter, scents, etc. to add because this way you will be able to find what you like to use in making your own formulas. Some things to know is that when using Butters, i.e. Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Kokum Butter, Mango Butter, Aloe Butter, etc. you will find that the formula will be thicker than if using liquid oils only. This you might find you will have to balance by using an oz. or so more of Distilled Water, Aloe Juice, Goats Milk, Herbal Tea or whatever you are using in the liquid phase. This is why I like playing with formulations in this small amount and take lots of notes to each thing that I do. Keeping good notes is always a good idea in order to know what you might want to do next time if a correction has to be made. I have added a few formulas with suggested oils in them below as well if you would like to try them. If you are in need of containers for your Lotions, Creams, etc. I have them listed here (Bottles, Jars, etc.) If you are in need of Oil, Butters, Emulsifying Wax, Stearic Acid, Preservative, etc. I have them listed here (Oil, Butters, Waxes, etc. ) TLC Cream Formula Liquid Phase 12 oz. Distilled Water or liquid of your choice Oil Phase 3/4 oz E-Wax 1 1/2 oz Stearic Acid 1/4 tsp. Glycerin (optional) 2 3/4 oz Oil, mix as you choose Approx 17 oz Instructions as to how to process are below the Lotion Formula. TLC Lotion Formula Liquid Phase 13 oz Distilled Water or liquid of your choice Oil Phase 1/2 oz E-Wax 1 oz Stearic Acid 1/4 tsp. Glycerin (optional) 2 1/2 oz Oil, mix as you choose Approx 17 oz Equipment for lotion and cream making Digital or food scale for weighing out your ingredients 2 stainless steel or enamel pots OR 2 good size plastic or glass bowls Thermometer to check temps (quick read works best) Heat resistant spatulas Either a hand mixer, wire whisk or stick blender Measuring spoons Fragrance of choice Instructions: Make sure that your equipment is sterile/clean. I have certain equipment for just making lotions, creams, body butters, etc. but if you can’t do that, make sure to clean them very well right before use, even if they have been washed. Washing again will help insure that they are more sterile/clean. Heat the oil phase and liquid phase in separate sterile pots. Remember to put the Ewax and Stearic Acid in the pot with the oils. And remember that everything must be melted completely for it to incorporate properly. I find that around 120° to 140°, taking it on and off the heat and stirring so as not to over heat, works best. Overheating can cause separation problems, it can destroy the skin properties in the whole oils that you want to keep and it can also break the oils down so they will go bad faster. You can hand stir, but to make a better emulsion, you can pulse with a Stick Blender for a minute and then hand stir and then pulse again for another minute. This makes a better emulsion because it makes it smoother and it binds it together better because of the speed of the blender or mixer but is harder to keep from flying out of the bowl or pot because there is such a small amount and the stick blender goes at such a high revolution. Another way to do this with this small amount is to use a hand mixer at high speed or wire whisk to make the emulsion. I place my pot or container in a cool water bath while I am stirring in order to help it cool down faster. This also keeps down any loss of water that might happen during the stirring phase. Stir a few more times, keep scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl/pot and when fully incorporated and cooled to about room temperature, add your Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil. Pour into your bottles or jars after it has cooled completely to room temperature. It is best to do this so there is no sweating inside your bottles or jars. I use a funnel for lotions that I have just for that purpose that has a big end on it so if the lotions are thick they will still go into the bottles with a little tapping if needed. For creams, I use a small spoon like a new baby spoon to spoon the cream into the jars. Then you can just label them as you like with labels you make from your computer. If you find as your formulate that your lotion or cream it to thin or to thick when it has cooled for several hours, you can make another batch that it thinner or thicker to add to the batch that did not come out right. To make a thicker lotion or cream, you can add more of the Stearic Acid and Emulsifying Wax, just a bit, maybe 1/4 oz. or so to your next batch that you make and this will make it very thick. To make it thinner to fix a batch that it to thick, add about 1 oz. or so more liquid. After you have made the new batch and it has cooled, stir in the lotion or cream that you are fixing till is it incorporated well, then bottle and/or jar. Another problem might be that the Emulsifying Wax is not compatible for using in smaller amounts without using another emulsifier with it. This is why I use the Emulsifying Wax that consists of Cetearyl Alcohol/Ceteareth 20. This is the only Emulsifying Wax that I use in conjunction with Stearic Acid in order to make all my Lotions, Creams, Hair Conditioners, etc. I do not like using only an Emulsifying Wax in my emulsions, because they can leave a film on the skin that will be transferred to any surface touched and just is not nice on the skin. Don't forget a good preservative as well. Lotion and Cream Formulas Below are a few more formulas that you can make some choices in. Each choice can be made for the helpfulness that each oil, butter, etc. can give to the skin or just because you want to try it and see how you like it. ![]() TLC Rich Lotion Liquid Phase 13 oz.
